The South Afreakins
Written & performed by Robyn Paterson
(date to be confirmed - likely October)
A hilarious and heartbreaking solo show about country, loss and the impossible search for home.
Written by Robyn Paterson, The South Afreakins is about Helene and Gordon. Stuck in their same armchairs, on their same farm and in their same rut. One longs to get out and experience everything in the world and retirement has to offer, while the other won't leave his milk tart.
When they finally leave everything they've ever known and immigrate to New Zealand, the result is hilarious and heartbreaking as they discover it's hard work to find "home".
Sure, the grass is always greener, but home is always home.
"Paterson take us on this journey with wit and emotional insight" - The Sunday Express

South African-born actress and award-winning playwright Robyn Paterson has worked for over 14 years in theatre, film and television, in Australia, New Zealand and London.
The South Afreakins is based on the story of her parents' immigration to New Zealand in 1994. They are excited to be immortalised in the play, although they can't quite shake the feeling that they're being made fun of.
Which they are a little. But in the nicest possible way.
"What starts off as a voyeuristic insight into a South African couple's daily bickering match convincingly develops as a thoughtful insight into immigration and displacement. Featuring a strong performance by Ms Paterson, the script cuts deep into the bone" - Theatreview New Zealand
5 Stars "Paterson's performance cannot be praised enough" - Live Theatre UK
