Hot Brass
National Youth Band of NZ
7.30pm, Friday 26 January 2018
Hear some of NZ's best before their Australian Concert Tour 2018. Experience the country's best and brightest young talent as they present 'History' - a celebration of over 200 years of incredible brass band music featuring Marlborough's very own Sam Powell and Jonty Zydenbos.
The National Youth Band auditions annually to find New Zealand's most talented young brass and percussion musicians to attend a summer school of tuition and training at the hands of the country's leading instrumentalists. Summer school in 2018 is at Woodbourne. Hear this talented group play at a special ASB Theatre concert in January 2018.
The National Youth Band will assemble in Blenheim in January 2018 for their annual residential school, this year including our very own Sam Powell and Jonty Zydenbos. During their week at Woodbourne they will be tutored by New Zealand's leading instrumentalists under the Musical Direction of David Bremner - the NZSO's principle trombonist, well known to Cavalcade subscribers. At the conclusion of the week-long school Cavalcade will present the Band in concert at the ASB Theatre.
The National Youth Band is the musical equivalent of the Junior All Blacks - the country's finest young players. Members of the Youth Band are all under 23 years of age and selected from nationwide auditions of young band members from community based brass bands. There is no automatic selection for a place in the band, as each player must audition annually.

Producer's notes:
It is difficult to describe the effect upon an audience of the raw display of young talent this band presents. On the last occasion the band played in Blenheim - in 2015 - the band's performance that afternoon led to one of the most enthusiastic and prolonged standing ovations I ever saw (and participated in!) in the dear old Marlborough Centre.
I am as certain as I can be that we will see the same quality of performance - and the same exuberant reception - in the ASB Theatre in January next year. We only see this band once every two years - don't miss this one!
